2
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Today we are chatting with Vicki, Paris, Goodman Vicki is the author of to Sam with love a surviving spouse's story of inspired grief.
3
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: After the death, in 2019 of her husband, Sam, the love of her life, she was unexpectedly flooded with optimism, and presented with a host of possibilities for an exciting and meaningful future. She received valuable insights, seemingly coming from an outside source enabling her to conceive a more realistic and uplifting understanding of adversity and loss. She knows these concepts will free others to face the passing of a loved one with a far more optimistic outlook.
4
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: So now we're gonna ask you the big question, Vicki.
5
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: I'm ready.
6
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Okay, what's the most significant thing in your opinion, we can do as an individual to make the greatest impact on how the world is going.
7
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Yeah, I think you know, we're all presented with insights at various points in our lives. And you know, if they're really good, I think we should share them, and in my case.
8
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: I was presented with insights after I published the book. So
9
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: so the book is more. Hey? This is, you know, this is the story of a poster child for moving on after the death of the love of your life in the most optimistic and positive way while grieving for that loss. And the insights are what we really need to talk about. I think, Jill, because the ones that came after I published the book.
10
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: because those will be the key to understanding
11
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: the best way to think of death and loss and adversity in general, in order not to awfulize them and make them so tragic.
12
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: You have a really unique perspective about that, and I'd love for you to share it with the listeners.
13
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Yeah, I think. I think the best insight I received of several was that death really isn't tragic.
14
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Now, this does require a certain belief system. But most people hold that belief system I've found, and that is that there is a loving God and a beautiful beyond words afterlife. And in that afterlife there is a love so powerful that that
15
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: that surrounds the souls that are there, that we can't even begin to imagine that love while we're here on earth, and so given all of that, and given that
16
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: my husband, Sam, went to this beautiful place ahead of me, I'm left behind, but I believe I will join him there someday. In the meantime God's plan for me was to experience more, to learn more.
17
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: and maybe even to teach others.
18
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: and that is what I'm doing here on your on your show, Jill. I want others to have the benefit of these insights.
19
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I love that.
20
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Yeah. And so so anyway, I I think, let me just say one other thing about that.
21
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Go ahead!
22
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: I think the reason we, even though we have this belief system, I think the reason that we awfulize death is because we're told to
23
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: our culture. Our Western culture tells us that death is tragic, and that and that loss is tragic.
24
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: And you know what makes my experience all the more stunning is that I was raised in a very secular household.
25
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: and my family doesn't believe in anything, and I didn't believe in much of anything until after Sam passed, and someone recommended that I read a particular story of a neurosurgeon, a secular neurosurgeon who had a near death experience and reading his story without going into any detail, because we don't have the time
26
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: brought me
27
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: all the way to believing fully in God and an afterlife and boy. Does it change things. For one thing, I no longer fear death, you know, when you don't believe in these things, you fear death because you think that death is the end.
28
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: It's really sort of a beginning.
29
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: It's a different birth.
30
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Yeah.
31
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And
32
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: to me, and when you talk about having a belief or a faith in God, it doesn't have to be like the Christian God or the Muslim God. It's just a God.
33
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: That's right.
34
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: The the energy that sustains us all.
35
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: You can believe anything you want, but you can't deny that there is energy in the universe, and that energy holds us together. So it's
36
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: no matter which story you you accept.
37
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: They all promise. Death is beautiful.
38
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Why, why should we fear that?
39
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Why should we fear that.
40
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Yeah, well, we shouldn't. And and we shouldn't fear or be so grief stricken over the death of someone who's very, very important to us. Yeah, we're going to grieve because there are changes to our life, big changes, you know. My husband, Sam and I shared a life. We shared this home, and suddenly I'm in my house
41
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: by myself. He does visit.
42
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: That's a story that we probably don't have time to tell, but it is in the book
43
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: and it's a great story. And it's also the story of how I asked God to verify that these visits really were from Sam's soul, from Sam
44
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: and I. And that prayer was answered.
45
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Yeah, it's a great story. So that's in the book.
46
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Yeah.
47
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: So people need to get the book for sure.
48
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Yeah.
49
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I do believe that people do come to you after they've passed, and I've had personal experiences with 2 individuals in my life that were very significant and important, and they.
50
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: their visits really helped cement for me the idea that a there is an afterlife. B. It's a great place. They're happy there, and
51
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: it it's what's waiting for all of us, you know. I.
52
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Absolutely.
53
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Let's think of Hawaii.
54
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Yeah, of of awfulizing death is can be traced back to money.
55
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: You know the funeral services and the like. It's just gonna be so tragic. And it has to be all of this stuff instead of just, you know.
56
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: honoring the passing of somebody and remembering them because they still live on so long as you remember them.
57
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: That's right. And I believe you can still have a relationship with this soul. It's not gonna be the same as it was before. But knowing Sam is there.
58
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: is really comforting.
59
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: you know. It helps me not to miss him so much because I can talk to him and
60
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: be pretty certain that he hears what I have to say. You know he doesn't talk back, but
61
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: you know other people have reported getting messages from from those who have died. You know. I I have a theories on, on. Why these things differ. People's experience differ, and why, near death experiences differ in certain ways, even though they seem to have a lot in common which lends to their credibility.
62
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Yeah.
63
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Why do you think that?
64
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: What are your ideas about? Why, the
65
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Why, different people have different experiences with.
66
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Oh!
67
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: The other side.
68
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: You know, this might sound kind of funny, but
69
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: you know some people find little notes or something, or or you know, maybe they have
70
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: letters from a game sitting around, and suddenly the letters become arranged in a way that there's a message there, or something. Well.
71
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Sam hated writing, so I'm not at all surprised that he doesn't leave me messages, you know. I mean, it's kind of silly to put it that way, but I think
72
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: the people who who have passed on are different. And so the ways in which they contact us or choose to relate to us from the afterlife are going to differ, you know. I I really don't know any more than that, and I don't even know that, you know. That's just
73
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: me, the
74
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: the one once upon a time, mechanical engineer, before I retired, you know, trying to think of it logically.
75
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: you know.
76
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I. I admire you as an engineer, to wander so far into the Woo.
77
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Well, you know, on the day Sam passed I was suddenly flooded with optimism on the very day it was unseemly.
78
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: and here it was the person who meant so much to me.
79
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: and I'm optimistic. And and my 1st instinct was to push it away because it was just too soon or so, I thought.
80
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: and then I thought, you know, during the 2 or 2 year ordeal from Sam's diagnosis to his passing.
81
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: I was really strong, we both were, and then in the last
82
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: 2 to 3 months that he needed taking care of, I took really good care of him, and I am not the caregiver type. There's a funny story in the book about that, too.
83
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: but I took really good care of him, and I thought, you know, given those 2 things.
84
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: If good things want to come my way. Even on the day Sam passed.
85
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: maybe I should let them. That's what occurred to me, and it was the best decision I could could have made, because all good things happened after that, and I did grieve, you know, especially
86
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: especially at night. I would I would feel a little lonely, and Miss Sam more, you know, than I did when I was, you know, busy during the day.
87
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: but I was still having that I was beginning a new chapter of life in which I was having the time of my life. You know that the difference was that I would come home and feel empty inside.
88
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: and I was pretty sure, after thinking about it, I was pretty sure that that had a lot to do with the fact that the person who I shared everything with wasn't there to share them with anymore, and no one to share things with. And I thought, Okay, that's the part I have no control over.
89
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: I can't do anything about that. So I'm on the right path, and it's just gonna be good. But maybe it won't be great for a while.
90
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: And so I thought, well, then, I'll just proceed on the way I am, and you know, trust that it will all work out and boy, it sure did.
91
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I love that story, the the
92
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: you can. You can embrace optimism. You can embrace whatever feelings that you're having. You don't have to feel a certain way, and you don't have to feel guilty for not feeling a certain way which.
93
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Am I glad you brought that up so many people because of this cultural conditioning? We are kind of taught to that. We have to grieve a certain way, and for a certain length of time, and that length of time has never been specified. So everybody interprets that for themselves, you know some people think it means well, I have to, at least.
94
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: you know, kind of keep myself at bay, maybe stay home mostly, or whatever, for you know 2 or 3 months, maybe I don't know. Some people interpret it to mean for the rest of their lives.
95
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Now, one of the insights I got with it with which I was so blessed was that.
96
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: And this is kind of based on the neurosurgeon story, too. I extrapolated this from reading his story.
97
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Souls in the afterlife. Because of this love, this unbelievable love that we can't imagine here on earth, but they are surrounded by it. Souls in the afterlife become perfected, and they don't experience negative emotions.
98
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: To me. That's the only logical conclusion to draw from from the fact that that
99
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: unbelievable love is there in the afterlife.
100
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: and if souls are perfected and don't experience negative emotions, then they don't experience anger or jealousy.
101
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: or any of those things. All they want for those they loved in life is for them to
102
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: experience the least amount of pain over their passing, and to move on as quickly as possible. So they don't, so they don't miss out on too much of life, and to do it in the most move on, that is, in the most spectacular way possible.
103
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: So the guilt needs to be thrown out the window. There is absolutely no reason for it. You can honor
104
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: your deceased loved one without without missing out on life, or what it has to offer out of guilt.
105
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Yeah, and
106
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: it's yours. Own it. It's your experience. We're all here to have an experience. And you know, depending on your belief systems, I think we're here to help God have an experience.
107
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: and that.
108
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: -
109
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: We're all pieces of him, it whatever. And and it's a journey back.
110
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And when you die you actually go back.
111
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And it's like the
112
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: the Japanese art of repairing pottery where they put gold in there and then all the pieces. So the original or the the
113
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: the repaired version is much more beautiful than the original version.
114
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And I look at that as souls coming back.
115
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: It's just it's just the picture that I taped for myself of life after, and I.
116
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: I love that.
117
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: You know you said something interesting. You said we are all a piece of God, and I do believe we are all a part of God. But the way you said it made me think of something.
118
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: it's almost as if God
119
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: has these different plan a different plan for each one of us, because he wants to live out something
120
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: slightly different through each one of us.
121
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: And and when you, when you realize that God has a different plan for you than He has for anyone else.
122
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: and if your loved one passes ahead of you.
123
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: we've already. We've already established that we shouldn't awfulize that event.
124
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: but beyond that we can also think of it as part of part of God's plan. This was meant to happen this way. It always was.
125
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: To think of it as a tragedy is to miss the point entirely.
126
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Kind of in a way it blasphemes God.
127
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: it says, oh, you missed you made a mistake.
128
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Yes, yeah, very. You know what?
129
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: I hadn't thought of that. But that's exactly right.
130
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Yes.
131
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Well, said.
132
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I've given this a lot of thought over the years.
133
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Yeah. Well, you know, that's a funny thing, too, because you know, we don't. Most human beings don't
134
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: think much about death, and we talk about it even less.
135
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: And you know, a lot of people might think, Oh, I don't want to listen to podcast about it. Either, you know
136
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: and really death is a great subject to ponder because of how we fear it. And you know we're always as human beings, afraid of the unknown and the uncertainty and all of that. And my message nails down a few things. If we have this belief system, there are certain things we can depend on.
137
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: and it doesn't have to be as uncertain or as frightening.
138
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: It really doesn't have to be frightening at all.
139
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: It doesn't, and whether you're experiencing it yourself or you're experiencing it with a loved one.
140
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: It's you're both on the path on this journey together for a while, and then they step off.
141
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: They reach their destination. And you're just not there yet. So it's okay.
142
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: And if you think about it, God's plan was for Sam
143
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: and and me to spend a certain part of our lives together.
144
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Okay.
145
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: And then I was never supposed to have him with me until the end of my life.
146
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: you know, because this is what happened, and I believe strongly that God planned it this way all along.
147
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: So the better thing to do is to say, Oh, okay, I'm left behind. That means God has a plan I should open myself to. Recognizing what those opportunities are, maybe embrace some or all of them, and see what I can make of this, because it's God's plan. And I was. This was always the way it was going to be.
148
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Yeah, and be happy about it. Excited. It's okay. Give you permission. You don't have to feel bad about wanting to move on with your life, and and to be what you're here to be, and exactly
149
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: who needs to hear your message? I shared with you before we started that I think my sister needs to hear your message. You know it's just somebody in my life that I know that could benefit from hearing what you have to share, and I know she shares the same belief system about. There is a God, and He cares about us, and he wants us to
150
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: be happy. I mean, I don't think
151
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: God expects us to be miserable.
152
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I think things happen in our lives usually because we create them that make us miserable right? But
153
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: but we don't have to live in that, and you know you can move through it and.
154
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Yes.
155
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Death is just one of those parts that
156
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: we're all going to have to face it for ourselves at some point. And we're all going to experience loved ones, leaving us
157
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: at some point.
158
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: And really it's a cause for celebration. It is not a cause for depression or extended grief.
159
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: They get to go to this fabulous place, and we'll join them there later.
160
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: It's a cause for celebration.
161
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I've talked to people who've lost young children or children, and the ones that are the most well adjusted and moving on with their lives and doing amazing things. So they don't waste the child's life.
162
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: They have this this belief that
163
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: their child came to them for a reason, a season, and now they're off doing whatever they're going to do next, and the the parent is left with
164
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: so many ways that they can help other people
165
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: experience joy after the death of a child, which again it goes back to, you know, if you lose a child, you
166
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: life's over.
167
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Nothing can. Nothing good can ever happen to you again. You don't deserve it.
168
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Right, you know, and everybody says it's happening in the wrong order, because, you know, I was supposed to die before my child, you know. And this is all wrong, all wrong. And
169
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: I used to actually buy into that, you know, until I started having this experience.
170
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: And well, I don't think I have to say it, because, you know, it's pretty much explained by everything you and I have just discussed that even even the death of a child. All it means is that child spent a lot less time than most of us do here on Earth.
171
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: But I don't think being here on earth is much of a percentage of the overall experience. I think it all happens in the afterlife. That's the main goal. And so if they get to go there sooner. Yeah, they get to go there sooner as opposed to later. You know they there's this saying, the good die young. Well, you know, we know that that isn't always the case. They're bad people that die young. And you know.
172
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: And we could get into a discussion. Are there really bad people? I? Well, yeah, no, we don't want.
173
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: I I will go there with you, because I don't really think there are.
174
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Totally bad people. I think there are people that have
175
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: are here to have an experience for God that we would term bad.
176
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: because we, we perceive what the experiences that they're going through as bad. But we are having that experience. We may be impacted by that experience. And I'm not so sure that we didn't agree before we came to go through that experience
177
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: again for God, because it's part of His plan.
178
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Even the Bible says, God is the author of both good and evil. Most people miss the and evil part.
179
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Yeah. Yeah. And that's that's really the crux of it.
180
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: When you understand that that he's the author of both. Yeah, yeah, huh?
181
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: It's all.
182
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Oil.
183
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Experience. It's just like that's that's the whole point of existence. Is.
184
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: You know it's.
185
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Some of us.
186
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: Yeah. And some of us have a much better experience on Earth than others. Do you know, think about people in 3rd World countries, you know that don't have what we have. But when you, when you look at this whole concept of God's plan.
187
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: he's going to take us all to that beautiful place eventually, you know.
188
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: you know, did we get lucky? Because we're here, instead of, you know, in in some core country, on some other continent.
189
::Vicki Paris Goodman InspiredGrief.com: those people might.
190
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: It's even a I don't really know that that's even a bad thing, because those people are having a different experience. We have a perception of what we want to experience in this
