Positivity Isn’t Healing (It’s Avoidance) — How to Hear Your Own Voice Again
If “just think positive” actually worked… you wouldn’t be here.
In this episode, I’m joined by writer & coach Alli Gatlin, and we talk about why positivity can keep you stuck, how people edit themselves into silence, and what changes when you stop outsourcing your inner voice.
We go deep (and we laugh a lot) on:
- Radical curiosity: stop trying to feel something, start learning something
- Honesty: dropping the mask and telling the truth (to yourself first)
- Shame: why it keeps you looping—and how to drop it
- Boundaries: not rules for other people… authority inside you
- Identity + self-trust: rebuilding your voice in small, doable moments

4
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: A writer and coach helping burnt-out, stuck humans rebuild their inner trust and remember who the fuck they are, helping you hear your own damn voice again. Welcome to the show, Allie. It's so great to chat with you.
5
::Alli Gatlin: Yes, I am so happy to be here.
6
::Alli Gatlin: You nailed it, yeah, all I want people to do is just hear their own damn voice again, and just…
7
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Remember who the fuck they are.
8
::Alli Gatlin: Plain and simple. You've got… podcast over, you nailed it, that's all I gotta do.
9
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Well, we're gonna dive deeper into that, but first, the big question. What's the most significant thing, in your opinion, as individuals we can do to make an impact on how the world is going?
10
::Alli Gatlin: It's kind of two things. It's a two-parter.
11
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: One.
12
::Alli Gatlin: Embrace radical curiosity.
13
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: stop…
14
::Alli Gatlin: just leaning into your automatic, like, fail switch of, well, I feel like crap, or I feel, you know, angry. Radical curiosity. Stop wanting to feel something, and start being open to learning something.
15
::Alli Gatlin: And that means with yourself, with others, and two, start being fucking honest. We're just constantly all
16
::Alli Gatlin: putting on a show. It's just everyone's wearing a mask or doing some type of performance piece, whether it's
17
::Alli Gatlin: you know, putting on a show or a version of themselves because it's been easier, or because that's what that person wants to see, or… people aren't honest with others.
18
::Alli Gatlin: About who they really are, and then it really turns into they start not being honest with themselves.
19
::Alli Gatlin: But they're just rooted in shame because of it, so… radical curiosity, honesty, and dr- Actually, 3 things. Drop the fucking shame.
20
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Yeah, I'm sick.
21
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And don't let others shame you.
22
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: It's like, don't… We only experience emotions if we accept them into
23
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: into ourselves. And I think when we talk about boundaries, which is kind of a buzzword for the last few years, but boundaries are not something external, it's not something you put on other people, it's something you have for yourself. It's inside of you. It's that thing that says, this… this is who I am.
24
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And these are the things that I want in my life. Like, I… when I discovered what my core values were, it really helped the boundary piece make more sense to me, because I… then I have something to filter it through. The boundary is actually my values. If something is not giving me peace.
25
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: It does not belong in my life. It's not a statement against whatever it is. It can be perfectly fine, but if it's agitating me, or causing me grief.
26
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: It doesn't belong with me.
27
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: It can belong with somebody else who's looking for that. And it's totally fine, and then it gets away from the labeling good-bad.
28
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Because, you know, people are just people.
29
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: They're not good or bad, they're just people. And… but not all people fit
30
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: In your little corner of the puzzle.
31
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah, can I kind of touch on that? One, you just nailed something, perfectly that is a huge portion of the philosophy that I teach. And I always love this, because you're the coach's alchemist, and the philosophy that I teach within all of my work is perspective alchemy.
32
::Alli Gatlin: And the alchemy of perspective. And… but it comes down to a huge portion of it is non-duality, which is what you said. People are not either good or bad, it just is. But non-duality can be a huge portion of your entire life.
33
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And also, ethical and healthy detachment theory, right? So being able to detach yourself from.
34
::Alli Gatlin: all of it, and that's kind of where boundaries come into play, is people misunderstand what boundaries are. They think that boundaries are, well, I'm not going to let you talk to me this way. Well, no, that is a condition.
35
::Alli Gatlin: That's a rule that you're trying to impose on somebody else. Boundaries are an internal process, and it's a way of us to take authority within our own actions to honor our own values.
36
::Alli Gatlin: And so, I always say it like this, don't try to change the vibe of the room, just leave the fucking room.
37
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Yes, exactly!
38
::Alli Gatlin: Like, oh man, I walked into that party and it sucks, like, I'm gonna try to fix it up. Like, no, just, that's not your party, babe.
39
::Alli Gatlin: That's just a different…
40
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: party.
41
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah, like, that's just not your party. So, yeah, you can tell people, like, hey, like, I don't want to be spoken to that way.
42
::Alli Gatlin: And everything after that is on you. It has nothing to do with them at that point. If they continue to speak to you.
43
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Why do you even bother?
44
::Alli Gatlin: They didn't leave.
45
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Yeah.
46
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Why even bother? Just disappear. And they won't notice.
47
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: It's the same goes on social media. I hear people complain often that, you know, social media sucks, and all I see is blah blah blah blah blah. So, you know, there's a block button.
48
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And if you don't interact with stuff, the algorithm will stop showing it to you.
49
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Just don't comment, like…
50
::Alli Gatlin: That's where the honesty portion comes in, right? People…
51
::Alli Gatlin: I see this a lot, and…
52
::Alli Gatlin: I have been guilty of this, and who hasn't, right? But… it…
53
::Alli Gatlin: That whole, like, fun catharsis of…
54
::Alli Gatlin: just having something to bitch about, right? Like, being able to complain about something, it's… it can feel fun, almost, and it feels… it… it scratches that itch, just to be like, yeah, I'm not the fucking problem, that's the problem. But if we really look at ourselves honestly.
55
::Alli Gatlin: We're looking for things to be pissed at.
56
::Alli Gatlin: And so, we want to complain about, like, oh, it's always this, it's always that. Well, yeah, but also, you keep looking for that.
57
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: It's… it's a way to be a victim, rather than taking personal responsibility. I'm an anarchist, and my ideal of anarchy is that everyone takes personal responsibility for who they are and how they feel.
58
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And…
59
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: we don't have governments, because I think governments push people into that duality mindset, and they govern by fear. It's just… it's universal, it's governments, it's religions, it's any institution that wants people to conform
60
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And not be authentically themselves.
61
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Yeah. Here are… Yeah.
62
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: for a prize. And, you know, good citizen, you're…
63
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: part of this Team Red, or Team Blue, or Team Purple, Team Rainbow, Team whatever. I, you know, I'm tired of the fucking teams.
64
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I, you know, just, like, be who you're gonna be.
65
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I don't… I'll like you, or… or I won't.
66
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah.
67
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And you need to…
68
::Alli Gatlin: like most people, unless you're a dick, you know? And even sometimes, like, you can be a dick sometimes, and I'm like, I'm kind of still with it. But, I mean, I have… we have one house rule in our household.
69
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And it was the first sentence, like, my kid even learned really how to say.
70
::Alli Gatlin: Which is… Don't be a dick.
71
::Alli Gatlin: like…
72
::Alli Gatlin: And I've been saying that to my kids since he's learned how to speak, and in my, like, community on school, it's don't be a dick. In my village, just in life, just don't be a dick.
73
::Alli Gatlin: And…
74
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Maybe that.
75
::Alli Gatlin: Choosing to be an asshole just because you can be an asshole.
76
::Alli Gatlin: Now, I'm not saying, like, everyone's an asshole accidentally all the time, like, we're… humans are the worst on accident all the time. That's what makes us human. Our ability to come back and be like, yo, I fucked up.
77
::Alli Gatlin: That is a beautiful part of BankHuman.
78
::Alli Gatlin: But if you want to be a dick, and you're choosing just to
79
::Alli Gatlin: be a problem, right? And sometimes that problem in being a dick is always choosing that victim mentality, and that isn't to say that, like, bad things happen, and that's shitty. You can be a victim of a situation, like, I have, you know, been a victim of some horrid situations in my life.
80
::Alli Gatlin: However, I am not a victim.
81
::Alli Gatlin: I have experienced being victimized in certain, like, situations, but I am not a victim. That's not my identity.
82
::Alli Gatlin: Because…
83
::Alli Gatlin: And that's what you were… we were saying earlier, like, we've over-corrected, right? It's… we've had so much self-help
84
::Alli Gatlin: just explosion of the self-help world, of the books, and the language, and the healing era, and all of that, that we've over-corrected. Now every… everyone's a victim in the sense of it's become a part of their identity, of, like, this hurt me.
85
::Alli Gatlin: this is why I'm, like, still healing, this is why I'm hurting, and it's just… it's always some… yes, bad shit happens, but the majority of us are adults now.
86
::Alli Gatlin: once you're an adult, you can feel the hurt, right? I'm… I'm a huge per… Huge.
87
::Alli Gatlin: Proactive, like, everyone should feel validated and heard.
88
::Alli Gatlin: Validation doesn't mean to sit in it forever, it means to feel it until you're done feeling it. But when you're in hell, don't stop in hell, just keep going.
89
::Alli Gatlin: Right? Let's just… let's not stay there.
90
::Alli Gatlin: And that takes us into, like, okay, do I want to continue feeling like shit? Do I want to always be angry? And if the answer is yes, fine, but you have to be honest about it. Own that. Like, no, I'm just… I like being angry. Say that truth.
91
::Alli Gatlin: That's okay, but say the truth about it. Don't say, like, it's…
92
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And you'll have a driveway!
93
::Alli Gatlin: Everybody else's fault.
94
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: People will follow you. I mean, there are brands that… Are all about… the negativity.
95
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I mean… It's a good news!
96
::Alli Gatlin: I mean, also, like, on the same token, I use a lot of it. Like, one of my… my clothing brands we've talked about is called Fuck Being Nice, FBN Nation. It's Fuck Being Nice. It sounds like it's angry, but it's actually… it's, you know, never nice, always kind. It's… it's a play on words. But, you know, it's…
97
::Alli Gatlin: You can use negativity in the language in a fun part of a way, but without making it you.
98
::Alli Gatlin: You don't have to be a piece of shit, and you don't have to feel like shit. You can choose to do something else.
99
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: You can choose kindness. No matter what situation you're in, you can always choose kindness. And kindness will…
100
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: We'll smooth the path, In almost every situation, Problems start happening when you're… When you're mad.
101
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And you want to blame somebody else, you want them to be responsible for the decisions you've made.
102
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And even if the decision was just showing up.
103
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: You can't blame the other person for being them.
104
::Alli Gatlin: Well, and that's where that radical curiosity comes in too, right? You've made up your mind before seeing every opportunity.
105
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And…
106
::Alli Gatlin: that's where you get stuck in, like, shame, anger, you know, if you choose to be radically curious, it's a far different outcome.
107
::Alli Gatlin: Like, I'm excited to be wrong about things. Like, if my knee-jerk reaction is to be angry about something.
108
::Alli Gatlin: I'll… I'll own that, like, oh, oh shit. I'm, like, being hella defensive, I'm being kind of a dick, but instead of, like.
109
::Alli Gatlin: What else could be true?
110
::Alli Gatlin: Like…
111
::Alli Gatlin: I get… I get excited when I'm wrong about things, because that means my world got a little bigger.
112
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: where we learn. We learn in the mistakes, we learn in figuring out things that don't work, so it opens the door for possibilities for other
113
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Other journeys to take, other things to explore, other ways of being to see if that fits for us. Rather than just, you know, sitting in this place where it's not working.
114
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And you're just making those around you miserable, and you might have good boundaries, but they will.
115
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: a certain portion of them will. The ones that don't, you don't really want it to be around them anyway.
116
::Alli Gatlin: Well, I think people also, too, forget that everything's temporary, right? So, it's okay to be honest in a moment, like, that fucking sucks, right?
117
::Alli Gatlin: That was horrible. I hated that. And you can be miserable for a minute, and be like, okay, what's next?
118
::Alli Gatlin: you don't have to stay in everything. Not every single moment, or every single thing that's happened to you, or every single feeling, it doesn't need to be a permanent thing, which is why I hate, like, the healing era of, like, I'm in my healing era. I…
119
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: It's just permission to be a victim.
120
::Alli Gatlin: Literally, it makes me want to just err. I'm already blind, but I can't… I'm done looking at that shit.
121
::Alli Gatlin: I'm just…
122
::Alli Gatlin: Like, I'll lose the rest of the 30. The 30% of vision I have left, like, if I have to only see that, I don't want to see no more. Like, we're done.
123
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: My husband and I, when we have disagreements.
124
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: we will sometimes come to each other and say, alright, I just want to be a victim for a minute.
125
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: That, we… Talk about all the…
126
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: the reasons why we're feeling victimized. Oh, yeah. And then, you can move into, okay, now… now I'm done with that, let's solve this problem. Well, because look at it.
127
::Alli Gatlin: You needed to be… yeah, you needed to be honest in that moment, like, you wanted to… you want to validate yourself, like, you have those feelings. Those feelings aren't not real. Right. Those feelings are feelings, but they don't have to be facts.
128
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Correct. So it's great that you have those things. That's…
129
::Alli Gatlin: I think that's where sometimes people miss… Understand my whole method is
130
::Alli Gatlin: I'm not saying that you can't feel like shit in a moment, like, sometimes the honest words are like, yeah, this sucks, I was a victim, this sucks, but you were, like, you don't have to be forever.
131
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And if you could be honest about, like, okay, this happened.
132
::Alli Gatlin: What do I want to do next?
133
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And your community is all about that. I… before we started recording, I was,
134
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: wanting to share with you that when I first joined.
135
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I was a little hesitant to participate.
136
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah.
137
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Because it's… It's kind of…
138
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: you're not really sure, can this really be true? Is this really a safe space to be me? Because…
139
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Me is often larger than life.
140
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah.
141
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: you know, you tell me your problem, I'll give you a solution.
142
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: If you just want to bitch, you may need to tell me that up front, because otherwise I'm solving that problem for you, because I'm a problem solver.
143
::Alli Gatlin: Okay.
144
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: 2AM.
145
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And I'll run you over with solutions, often.
146
::Alli Gatlin: Okay, so you're… in terms of Parks and Rec, you're like the Leslie Knope of it, you're just gonna steamroll, like, I can fix that!
147
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I'm definitely there.
148
::Alli Gatlin: Okay.
149
::Alli Gatlin: Do people like that?
150
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: My people seem to like it okay.
151
::Alli Gatlin: Well, because you…
152
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: But I'm not for everybody.
153
::Alli Gatlin: Yes, and that's okay.
154
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And that is okay. And I have learned to ask people
155
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Did I just blow you away with the fire hose? I recognize that my method is very much, I'll give you as much information as I think you can handle.
156
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And I have a lot of information.
157
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I've lived a long time.
158
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah.
159
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: But I don't want to overwhelm people, I just want to give them enough that they can get moving, and then we'll revisit it. I'll talk to you a bazillion times.
160
::Alli Gatlin: Well, and you've seen that meet… I do that often in my… in the community, like, with the comments, I'm like, hey, like, are you open to a new perspective? Like, well, I'll… what I… the language I try to use is, I dare you to try this just the one time. Tell me how that sits.
161
::Alli Gatlin: And also, I tell everyone, I am the happiest person to be like, Allie, go fuck yourself, like, fuck right off with that. I'm like, oh, okay, for sure, yeah.
162
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Saving me time, girl!
163
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah, like, absolutely, babe. Run it!
164
::Alli Gatlin: And it's like, I still love you, you still love me, but like, yeah, I'll fuck right off on this one. Like, that's totally fine with me. I have… I take no offense to that, because…
165
::Alli Gatlin: it's irrelevant to me, in terms of, like, you want me to coach you? Then I'm here to coach you. You want me to just hear you? I'm gonna hear you. But now, I do have a no-bullshit policy, right? Like, I've… I've had to call out a couple people, I'm like, I'm pretty sure you're lying to yourself on this one. And I'm like, I'm like, hey, I'll send you a DM real quick.
166
::Alli Gatlin: And then they're like, dude, you just called me out, it's so tough. I'm like, yeah, but I called you up privately.
167
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: that in life. We need people to say, you know, do you really mean that?
168
::Alli Gatlin: That's the thing, and that's why I teach the right ugly Method, and I have people go through the six-word process, and go through the 3-2-1-1 framework, you know? Because it really does… it only takes 2 minutes a day to build up a practice. It's not just about journaling, right? And you realize that, too.
169
::Alli Gatlin: Yes, it's called written identity journaling, but that's for SEO stuff, but you'll learn how to journal, sure.
170
::Alli Gatlin: But you're not learning just journaling, you're learning how to create small pauses in your mindset.
171
::Alli Gatlin: and your day-to-day, just, actions, which is like, oh shit, I'm having a big feeling. Okay, let me just do a quick reset here, like, what's real… what am I feeling? What story could I be telling myself? What's really happening? What do I want to do next, right? And it's easy to figure that out, and if you don't know how to start, just pick that one word, like.
172
::Alli Gatlin: Like, anguish, or… Great. You know, you…
173
::Alli Gatlin: pick that thing, like, what are you feeling? Where do you feel it in your body? And…
174
::Alli Gatlin: First, just write the data. Like, what are you feeling? And when I say write, I am an active proponent for accessibility. If you can't just write it down at the moment.
175
::Alli Gatlin: Record a voice note to yourself. I use voice notes constantly.
176
::Alli Gatlin: And, like, those count, because one, it'll transcribe it for you. Like, that still counts.
177
::Alli Gatlin: It's about taking the moment to pause, and just having that moment to…
178
::Alli Gatlin: What's true right now, and honest words are always going to be better.
179
::Alli Gatlin: been pretty once.
180
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: This year, I… I… I'm… Embracing the idea of having the experience.
181
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Which is… Instead of wanting things in the future, I'm going…
182
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: to enjoy the experience I'm having right now, whether it's sitting in traffic that you weren't expecting, or something unexpected happens to you, or you're just walking down the street. Enjoy the experience you're having right now, and be real about it.
183
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: This is the experience I'm having.
184
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: What can I learn from it? Be curious!
185
::Alli Gatlin: Radical curiosity, yeah.
186
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: around what… what the experience is bringing to you. And all experiences bring us data.
187
::Alli Gatlin: everything is data. That's why I tell people, do some field work!
188
::Alli Gatlin: what's really happening? Do you really know even your, like, do you even know how you spend your day? Do you know how many times I'll do, like, my clarity calls with people? And I'm like, so, tell me what your, like, day-to-day is like, like, from morning to night, like, how do you, like, spend… they have no idea.
189
::Alli Gatlin: No idea how they spend their day.
190
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: It's hard if you don't have routines.
191
::Alli Gatlin: But it's not even about routine, but, like, can you recall what you did yesterday?
192
::Alli Gatlin: People live on autopilot. They have no idea what's happening.
193
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: You have routines, but then you forget the stuff that's also in between it, And so, it's like…
194
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Days just go by.
195
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And… And you've… they're kind of wasted days. You may as well have just got drunk, because… and…
196
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: laid on the couch and watched Mindless TV, because… That's…
197
::Alli Gatlin: which I still am an advocate for. Everyone's telling you, do your thing, babe.
198
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Yeah, I watch mine.
199
::Alli Gatlin: Not every day, but sometimes.
200
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Where I go to sleep, I like… Two hours to myself.
201
::Alli Gatlin: Yes.
202
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: But… Even at home, when I'm not here.
203
::Alli Gatlin: People just get lost in the sauce, right? And that's what it is. It's… they… it's that they're not curious to be themselves, and to feel like.
204
::Alli Gatlin: Okay, yeah, I'm feeling anger. Why am I feeling angry?
205
::Alli Gatlin: Like, I think the biggest thing that people forget to ask themselves is why.
206
::Alli Gatlin: Like, why am I angry? Why am I pissed off that I'm stuck in traffic?
207
::Alli Gatlin: Why is this happening? Why am I happy? Why am I sad? Why am I… you know, why is the best word, and really the only question we should ever be really asking ourselves.
208
::Alli Gatlin: Because it gets… and keep asking, and don't just ask it the ones. Why again? Why again? Why again? Why again? I, you know, go through, one of the programs that I run with people is, like, the… the value series, like.
209
::Alli Gatlin: What are your values?
210
::Alli Gatlin: it's like the value framework. Like, most people actually don't know what their values are, and you can't figure them out until why.
211
::Alli Gatlin: And why again? And it's like that 3-year-old, once they learn how to, like, the question, like, why? Why, mom? Why, mom? Why? Why?
212
::Alli Gatlin: I'm gonna be that person, and… but people realize that they don't know the answers.
213
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Yeah, there's the… the why thing. I did this years and years ago.
214
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: About what motivates you.
215
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah.
216
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And that was so powerful.
217
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Mine was significance.
218
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: it was at a time when I was feeling very insignificant.
219
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah.
220
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Probably, like, 15 years ago.
221
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: But… Identifying it really helped
222
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: to get me to the place where I'm at today, because I no longer feel insignificant. I feel very significant. I believe what I'm doing is making a difference in the world, and.
223
::Alli Gatlin: that was all I wanted. Yeah. Now, do you also feel a confident sense of self, even if you're not, like, being productive?
224
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I do. It allows me to rest, it allows me to take time for myself, and I do schedule time into my calendar.
225
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: For me. I have… I have good boundaries on my calendar. I love that. Something that I didn't used to have, and… and people feel like, oh, I have to have all this space because I want to fill it up. Well, really, if you just, like.
226
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: There's a… there's an old adage that I,
227
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I don't know if adage is the right word, but there's a story about getting stuff done, and it has to do with a jar and rocks. And you… you have a pile of sand, you have a pile of little rocks, and you have some big rocks. They will all fit in the jar.
228
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: But if you put the sand in first, they're not going to fit in the jar. You gotta put the big rocks in first. Those are the things you have to accomplish every day. The jar is your day. Then the pebbles are the things you want to accomplish.
229
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: there are more of those than the big rocks. The big rocks, you're talking, like, 2, maybe 3, if you've got, you know, a small amount of little rocks. Yeah. But then the sand, you pour in on top, it goes around the outside.
230
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And I… I look at my calendar like that. It's just like.
231
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: The big rocks are the things that are non-negotiables for me. Like, I don't want to be working at 7 o'clock at night. I want to be in bed in my pajamas.
232
::Alli Gatlin: Love that for you.
233
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: So, we don't do calls after, like, 3 or 4. 4 is, like.
234
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: If I really have to, I'll do it at 4.
235
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah.
236
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And in mornings, I like my mornings. I have a routine in the morning. I don't want
237
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I don't want to be doing calls that I want to go and walk, more… do other stuff.
238
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah, you want to have that flexibility to just…
239
::Alli Gatlin: do what feels right in that moment. You want to be able to have the authority
240
::Alli Gatlin: To do what needs to be done, as it needs to be done.
241
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah, because I feel like people… people overstretch themselves in a way
242
::Alli Gatlin: Because they feel that they need to, because they don't feel safe to rest.
243
::Alli Gatlin: They feel like you need to earn rest.
244
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: yeah, if I'm not continuing to work, then there's something wrong with me, and I think that's something that we've been trained to believe.
245
::Alli Gatlin: Gosh, yeah.
246
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: That… that resting is somehow something that you have to earn.
247
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Instead of… you know, we're human beings, and really, we're designed to be creative, and a lot of what we should be doing has to do with, you know.
248
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: growing food to sustain ourselves. We're probably the only species that, left to our own devices in the wilds, would starve to death.
249
::Alli Gatlin: Oh, I'd be just fine.
250
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Yeah.
251
::Alli Gatlin: I could grow a potato like no other.
252
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I can, too.
253
::Alli Gatlin: put Matt Damon on Mars.
254
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah, but I think it's because… well, yeah, we've… society has programmed us to…
255
::Alli Gatlin: Associate our identities with our output.
256
::Alli Gatlin: And that's also why we've adopted so many other people's voices, which is why one of the core things that I preach is learn how to… not just learn, but remember how to hear your own damn voice again.
257
::Alli Gatlin: And if you don't know how to remember, I'll teach you how to remember. And it's by taking small, little actions, small little moments, and things that you can do and put in action
258
::Alli Gatlin: to… Remember who you are, and rebuild that sense of trust within yourself, and that happens
259
::Alli Gatlin: with every tiny moment that you honor the real you, and not the one that you hear. So, right? So, you know when you get that great idea, you're like, oh, I should do this.
260
::Alli Gatlin: And then that next voice pops in, and all of a sudden, it's like, no, that'd be stupid. That stupid one? That's not you.
261
::Alli Gatlin: That… that's not you.
262
::Alli Gatlin: And… but that's somebody, you know, you probably heard that from somewhere, and you adopted your old boss's voice. You adopted some…
263
::Alli Gatlin: You know, shitty partner, or, you know, a weirdly jealous friend who was never your friend, or… we adopt so many other people's voices, and then we start speaking to ourselves in those that we forget whose voice was really ours.
264
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Sometimes.
265
::Alli Gatlin: to be heard.
266
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Bring our voices from when we were, like, 5 or 6.
267
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: in…
268
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: In that our brains weren't developed, but we accepted certain things as truths, and rather than reexamine them and tell ourselves a different story, we bring that story forward as though we're still 6 years old and don't have all of this other information to make decisions with.
269
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And people hang on to these stories that they create.
270
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I'm giving you permission right now, you can rewrite your whole story.
271
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Make it up.
272
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah!
273
::Alli Gatlin: We have the authority to live the life that we want to live.
274
::Alli Gatlin: And if you don't like feeling like shit, Choose not to.
275
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Like…
276
::Alli Gatlin: Why do you feel like shit? Okay, if that makes you feel like shit, stop doing that. If you want to feel and experience new things, you have to do new things. And people want to say, like, oh, well, this sucks.
277
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah, that does suck.
278
::Alli Gatlin: That sounds horrible.
279
::Alli Gatlin: What would you like to do instead? Okay.
280
::Alli Gatlin: Well, this is what you're doing right now, and you get this result.
281
::Alli Gatlin: Why don't you try this to get this result?
282
::Alli Gatlin: But people fail, like, they want to do something.
283
::Alli Gatlin: They talk about it, But then they don't take the action.
284
::Alli Gatlin: Awareness without action, creates that hollow… Feeling.
285
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And for the love of God, don't be telling your friends shit you're never gonna do.
286
::Alli Gatlin: Or if they do, then give your friends permission to fucking roast you, and be like, hey, you dropped the ball again, bud, you lied to all of us.
287
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And yourself, like…
288
::Alli Gatlin: What are you gonna be honest?
289
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Yeah.
290
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Cat.
291
::Alli Gatlin: Well, and that's the thing, right? Like.
292
::Alli Gatlin: And that's where, like, the healing and self, like, help and, like,
293
::Alli Gatlin: healthy boundaries and all of, like, this healthy communication and all of these things. We overcorrected.
294
::Alli Gatlin: so far, that we're all in our healing era. Well then, we're… if you're constantly in a healing era, that means you're always needing to be healed. Why not just be?
295
::Alli Gatlin: Right? Like, if you break your arm, you have a broken arm, you aren't an arm.
296
::Alli Gatlin: You don't have to adopt that as your identity. Yeah, let your arm heal, for sure.
297
::Alli Gatlin: But you still live while your arm is in a cast.
298
::Alli Gatlin: You don't necessarily…
299
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: adapt.
300
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah, and then, eventually, your arm's gonna get better, babe, like…
301
::Alli Gatlin: Are you always gonna be the girl with the broken arm? Like, 20 years later? Like, no!
302
::Alli Gatlin: That would be silly.
303
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: This is an excuse for inaction, often. And everybody has something that they could say, oh, this happened to me, therefore I can stop living. And really, that's what it's about. You stop living. When you stop making choices to enjoy your life.
304
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah.
305
::Alli Gatlin: And I'm not saying, like, we all have those, like, I'm 70% blind, and I jokingly have my blind days often, where sometimes it just feels too heavy and it feels like shit, but I'll own it and be like, you know what?
306
::Alli Gatlin: I'm blind today, and all I am is gonna be blind.
307
::Alli Gatlin: And I just feel, like, quit. And I just…
308
::Alli Gatlin: I'm a self-pity little monster, and I'm a goblin of just self-loathing.
309
::Alli Gatlin: And I'm okay with that.
310
::Alli Gatlin: But then, I get it out of… I feel better, because I only, like, yeah, I feel like shit, and I just let myself feel like shit. And then…
311
::Alli Gatlin: I don't want to feel… I was like, I don't want to do this every day.
312
::Alli Gatlin: Like, I don't want to keep feeling that, but I let myself feel it.
313
::Alli Gatlin: I felt it fully, and then we moved the fuck on.
314
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And everybody has things that cause their life to be difficult in different ways. Yeah.
315
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I admire you. Being 70% blind makes everything else you do exponentially more difficult.
316
::Alli Gatlin: I mean, I'm a remarkable problem solver.
317
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: You have to be. It's not…
318
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: an option for you. But that can be exhausting. And the fact that you own that, yeah, some days I just have blind days, yeah.
319
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: you fucking need it. You need to just be able to sit down and rest. You may call them fucking blind days, but they're just, like, they're rest days. Your body needs…
320
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah.
321
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Whoa, Allie, just… Sit on the couch.
322
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Listen to whatever, or… I'm pretty sure.
323
::Alli Gatlin: yesterday, I was lethargic, and I was like, I think I died yesterday for, like, a cool 7 hours.
324
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah, a resurrection athlete! Yeah, you know?
325
::Alli Gatlin: But, it's true, you just have to…
326
::Alli Gatlin: You just have to own where you're at.
327
::Alli Gatlin: But, just because that's where you're…
328
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: guilty about it.
329
::Alli Gatlin: But no! And then, not feeling guilty allows you to feel it, and then move on. It's the shame that keeps you in the loop.
330
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah! Because then you never fully rest.
331
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: People are… You can beat yourself up, like, and then you want to do more.
332
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah, and so, like, when they're resting, they're never really resting, because they're thinking about all the things they have to do.
333
::Alli Gatlin: Instead of just… Resting!
334
::Alli Gatlin: And so then when they're working, all they're doing is thinking about resting, and then they're never focused on the work.
335
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And that goes back to what we were talking about earlier with, you know, fixing your calendar so you have space in your day so that you can rest, or do something that's not, like, work-oriented. We're… we're so trained to, like, we always have to be producing something, and…
336
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Get the content out there, and do your marketing, and do this, and do that, and make your videos, and learn 47 other ways to, like, get your message out there. You know.
337
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Less is more.
338
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Slow down, you don't…
339
::Alli Gatlin: Bye, everyone.
340
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Everybody?
341
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah.
342
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: You just need what… what is…
343
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: What you can value while you're creating it.
344
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: There's a lot of junk.
345
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: That just gets thrown out quickly.
346
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah.
347
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: You know?
348
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Take some… take some space and really think about how you feel about what you're creating.
349
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: So that you can have others feel that, too.
350
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Rather than just… throwing stuff out there. And you only get there by taking space.
351
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah. For yourself.
352
::Alli Gatlin: Well, and I think there's a delicate balance, right? Because
353
::Alli Gatlin: I also think that there's the authority and of action of, like, owning that, like, I made a commitment to myself to do X, Y, and Z, and even sometimes if it sucks, but to still do it, if that's the commitment that you made to yourself, right? Because that's… that action builds the self-trust. Like, not everything's going to be great.
354
::Alli Gatlin: But it's okay to not be great, and to still do something. But also, about making the schedule, it's not just about your schedule for, like, what you produce, but creating a schedule that meets your needs.
355
::Alli Gatlin: In all parts of things.
356
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Yeah.
357
::Alli Gatlin: And that schedule looks different for every single person.
358
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And you can change it! That schedule can change.
359
::Alli Gatlin: And so people need to create systems for themselves At their lowest, like, Barely surviving on life, like.
360
::Alli Gatlin: brushing their teeth is hard, putting on hard pants. I didn't put on hard pants today, I'm wearing stretchy pants, you know? It's just, we all have to have a system, but I have a uniform that works, so I have good black stretchy pants that match my good black top, so it still looks good together. I found a system that works for me, even on the hard days.
361
::Alli Gatlin: And…
362
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: That's why I wear overalls.
363
::Alli Gatlin: I love overalls. I have a pair that are so cute. They're linen. I love them.
364
::Alli Gatlin: I wanted this pair of leopard print ones, but I can't… I couldn't find them in my size.
365
::Alli Gatlin: But I wasn't sure if they were stretching after the butt.
366
::Alli Gatlin: But speaking of butts, you know, people need to create variations of their systems to meet them where they are.
367
::Alli Gatlin: So they don't have to shame themselves for not being
368
::Alli Gatlin: their best self, because some days, you kind of suck. Some days, you're phenomenal, but even when you suck, you can still be your best self on a shitty day.
369
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: You just have to know how to do it.
370
::Alli Gatlin: And also not feel like shit about it while you're there. Like, that's where you are, it's okay to just be like.
371
::Alli Gatlin: this is who I am today. That's okay.
372
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Yeah, and giving ourselves permission to just be ourselves.
373
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah.
374
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Today, we're the Tomorrow, we might be totally different.
375
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah! We deserve… we deserve to live as ourselves, and not keep putting on this facade of everything's fine, and I'm perfect, and… It's exhausting, and that's why people feel so hollow. They're just out of alignment with who they are.
376
::Alli Gatlin: They don't listen to their body, they don't listen to their brain, they don't listen… or they're constantly in conflict with one or the other.
377
::Alli Gatlin: And it just feels silly.
378
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And you address all of this in your school community, and on your sub stack. I love your substack. You just…
379
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Your personality is so hilarious to me.
380
::Alli Gatlin: I just need…
381
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: just thinking of you makes me smile. You just bring… you bring some joy de vie to… to everybody whose lives you touch, but…
382
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And that comes through in your sub stack.
383
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Articles all the time.
384
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And…
385
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I'm part of your community, and I just love it over there. I reached level 4. By the time people read this, or hear this, I'll probably be maybe 6.
386
::Alli Gatlin: I hope so.
387
::Alli Gatlin: I…
388
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I'm working my way through the exercise that opens up in Level 4. God, it's so.
389
::Alli Gatlin: Oh, are you loving that one? The identity challenge? Whoo!
390
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Totally loving that one. And it's not… It's not like… A whole lot of time.
391
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And none of these exercises take a lot of time or a lot of thought, and it's better if you don't overthink it.
392
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah.
393
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I'm finding, it's just, like.
394
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Normally, when I show up to something, and I always have that, I need to get an A.
395
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah.
396
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: But it doesn't matter in your community. There's no grades. There's no right, there's no wrong, no labor.
397
::Alli Gatlin: Right? Showing up honestly, that's the A.
398
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Yeah, yeah.
399
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And it… You give people a framework for showing up in a way that,
400
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: It's… it's very open and freeing. There's…
401
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: There's freedom in being able to just express what you're gonna express.
402
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah.
403
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Quickly.
404
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Without overthinking it.
405
::Alli Gatlin: I…
406
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Or justifying it.
407
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah, people get so lost in the sauce, and that's why most people don't have a writing practice, and they don't journal or do any of those things, or have any type of intentional reflection, is because it feels like this big, jaunting thing.
408
::Alli Gatlin: 2 minutes!
409
::Alli Gatlin: You can be honest and say, Have this huge… mindset shift
410
::Alli Gatlin: In 2 minutes and 6 words.
411
::Alli Gatlin: Everybody has 2 minutes a day and 6 words that they can, like, give to themselves.
412
::Alli Gatlin: Everyone has it.
413
::Alli Gatlin: And you can… Over time, those things build up, you're building up
414
::Alli Gatlin: Owning that trust and authority and action to yourself, and rebuilding that relationship with you.
415
::Alli Gatlin: 6 words a day, two minutes a day. Over the course of a couple weeks, you're like, oh shit.
416
::Alli Gatlin: I think I'm getting to who I am again. I remember, like, I'm feeling great.
417
::Alli Gatlin: It, it adds up.
418
::Alli Gatlin: And so I take out the guesswork of what it takes to do that, and take out the mysticism of it.
419
::Alli Gatlin: It's not this overwhelming, daunting thing.
420
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: It is really simple, and I love that about your community. It's just… Just drop in.
421
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And then you can see other people, how they're… how they're interacting, and you can… and it's not about judgment, it's just about.
422
::Alli Gatlin: about…
423
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: witnessing.
424
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah.
425
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And we're all bearing witness for each other, which… just, it's like…
426
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: We're just standing there, and we're appreciating… What you're sharing.
427
::Alli Gatlin: Yeah.
428
::Alli Gatlin: Well, you know, so school calls it a… school calls them communities, and our community, it's…
429
::Alli Gatlin: a village, not just a community. Because you know the phrase, it takes a village?
430
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: It does.
431
::Alli Gatlin: Everyone knows that phrase, but no one knows that feeling.
432
::Alli Gatlin: How many times have you wished that you…
433
::Alli Gatlin: Had some people or someone that just gave a fuck.
434
::Alli Gatlin: I wanted to hear you.
435
::Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Too many times…
436
::Alli Gatlin: Myself, I'm sure you, every single person I've ever spoken to, was like, yeah, I just, I feel alone.
437
::Alli Gatlin: If everyone I talk to feels alone.
438
::Alli Gatlin: One, you're not alone in that feeling. Two, Let's fix that.
439
